So, I am looking for a lens for the wife's Olympus E-450 (entry D-SLR) the point being, to take general photos (family, action, still life) and have as narrow a depth a filed as possible... So if you are not familiar with the platform, maybe at least give me an idea of what I need... f-stop, focal length, all that, thanks!!!

Oh, it is a secret/christmas type deal... I should delete this later, so she no see it.

I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about Olympus cameras. I have ALWAYS had Sonys specifically Cyber Shots. My DSLR is also a Sony. To be honest, I use the basic settings in my camera to adjust the f-stop and what not. I have only had my DSLR since the beginning of this year and it came with my 2 lenses so I havent even experimented with them. Your going to want to get a 3.5-5.6/18-55 lens. Thats what I use for panoramas/group shots/macro shots.

I think that is similar to the lens I have... She is looking to specifically have a very narrow dof, so onoy the subject is in focus, behind and maybe in front as well, is fuzzy...

From what I have leared, I want a low f# like 2 ish... and get close to the subject/keep the background far away, and use the longest focal length I can.

If you want the subject in fpcus and the background fizzy to fizzyish, you want to adjust the aperture

Yeah, ours doesn't adjust far enough... So looking for a f2 lens, or a much longer focal length lense, because (how it was explaned to me) zooming in, on a longer focal length lense, compresses the dof, and lets you get the eqivilent of smaller f numbers.

Everything you just said sounded like Charlie Browns teacher trying to explain where babies come from.
